Thank you for your participation at the Eco Building Conference and Exhibition 2011, held at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre in Pailles.
It is with pleasure that we provide you with this executive report on the event which has been based on feedback requested from various stakeholders.
Overview This second Mauritius Eco Building Conference and Exhibition was hosted at the formidable Swami Vivekananda Convention Centre which as a venue was able to cater for the number of delegates and exhibitors in attendance. The venue is well situated and easily accessible.
The event was co-hosted by the Mauritius Association of Architects and in partnership with Mauvilac Group Ltd and Manser Saxon Ltd.
Event was held in association with Mauritius Commercial Bank, Sofap (Permoglaze), Holcim, AHRIM, BACECA, MEECA and the IEM.
Sponsors used the opportunity to great effect by incorporating impressive exhibit displays that added significantly to the overall impression of the exhibition floor, with many exhibitors going to great lengths with their stands. The sponsors have made the event a success and we are thankful to them as their initiatives’ will guide Mauritius to becoming a greener island with less impact on the environment.
We also had the presence of two NGO’s namely the Mauritian wildlife foundation and Amoris which are both educating about environmental issues and how we can change our habit to impact less on the environment.
The Exhibition included 26 booths displayed on the Exhibition floor. Here also, we would like to thank the companies that have been supporting us and have by exhibiting their products, educated the delegates as well as the public on the sense of concern and which product or solutions they will offer that will impact less on the environment and make buildings more efficient and less polluting.
Attendance More than 400 people attended the event in various professional capacities including day visitors during the open period, and close to 300 delegates registered for the conference and workshop sessions, and the conference was accredited by the Mauritius Qualifications Authority. Delegates presence makes the event successful and shows their interest in eco building.
Attendance Breakdown Of the Conference delegates in attendance: 32.8% were professionals 4.4% were from government and NGO 62.8 % were from the commercial and/or corporate sector
Among the Professionals were members of the following associations:
o Mauritius Association of Architects - MAA o Institute of Engineers of Mauritius o Mauritius Quantity Surveyors Association o Mechanical, Electrical engineering contractors Association o Building and Civil Engineering Contractors Association o Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Mauritius
The majority of Commercial and Corporate Delegates were representing the following markets sectors: o Property Sector o Construction Sector o Financial Sector o Research, Education Sector o Service Orientated Companies – i.e. Consultants o Suppliers and Product based Companies
Government and NGO delegates represented the following departments and organizations:
o Ministry of Public Infrastructure o Mauritian Wild life foundation and Amoris o CWA- Central water authority o CEB- Central electricity board

Conference outcomes
1. Close to 300 delegates from various sub-sectors of the built environment sector attended two days of presentations that were intended to a) inspire and motivate change within the sector and b) educate professionals about the practices, trends, policies and technologies that can and should be used as eco building interventions.
2. Plenary sessions were focused on delivering international and local content, looking at issues such as the global context and best practice with numerous case studies that examined issues in eco building that relate to the specific conditions faced by the Mauritian built environment sector.
3. Speaker’s presentations have been posted on www.ecobuilding.mu and the event has and will continue to be summarised and discussed on the Mauritian e-Journal of Eco Building.
4. Event content will also be submitted to the Eco Building Website: www.ecobuilding.mu and various social marketing initiatives will serve to increase web traffic to the forum in order to stimulate ongoing dialogue amongst attendees.
5. High profile international speakers in attendance congratulated us on the content and enjoyed the extent to which content was aimed at the local industry.
6. Various partner organisations were given the opportunity to communicate to the valuable delegate audience and certain joint-venture projects were initiated or progressed as these organisations enjoyed the opportunity to engage with one another.
7. Through the exhibition, delegates were exposed to product and service providers who can facilitate the implementation of the eco building specifying and design principals espoused by speakers in the plenary.
8. Feed back from exhibitors is that they were able to make their products known and that the event presented a high calibre of delegate able to make buying decisions.
9. An event summary will be submitted to the Mauritius Ile Durable Committee and to the National Consultation forum leadership for assimilation into various processes. |
